זה אולי נשמע דמיוני, אבל התיאוריה הזו צוברת יותר ויותר מאמינים, שבטוחים כי האנושות תעבור מהפכה בעשרות השנים הקרובות. השאלה הגדולה מבחינתם היא לא אם זה יקרה, אלא מתי ואיך. תיאוריה זו מכונה "הסינגולריות הטכנולוגית", או בקצרה "הסינגולריות". חסידיה מדברים על כך שבנקודת זמן עתידית כלשהי, המחשבים ייהפכו לחכמים הרבה יותר מבני האדם – וההישג הזה ישנה את העולם ויתחיל עידן חדש. ולמה השם "סינגולריות"? כי לטענתם, מדובר בנקודה ייחודית בהיסטוריה, שפשוט אי אפשר לחזות מה יקרה לאחריה. אם תרצו, מדובר בתחילתו של עולם שמתנהל לפי כללים אחרים לגמרי – ובלתי ידועים עדיין.
