Transhumanism in Israel

Ilia Stambler

First published in July 2020 Technoprog

The Israeli transhumanist community can be traced back to the emergence of the regional “Israel and Middle East” forum of the Immortality Institute (now Longecity) website in 2004. https://www.longecity.org/forum/forum/309-israel-middle-east/ This was one of the first two regional life-extensionist forums (beside Russia and Eastern Europe) where Israelis interested in life extension and transhumanism could openly discuss their interests. From these discussions, there started the first live meetings of Israeli tranhumanists and life-extensionists. The first live meeting took place on January 27, 2006, a pioneering event in Israel. https://www.longecity.org/forum/topic/9057-1st-isr-imminstwta-mtng-jan27-1030-biu/

From the beginning, the Israeli transhumanist community was mainly interested in life extension, rather than other traditionally “tanshumanist” topics, such as “enhancement” or “singularity” as it has been accepted that the prolongation of human life is the main condition and necessity for any kind of human development, and hence the promotion of life extension takes precedence.

Then a series of such meetings (seminars), including lectures and discussions on life extension and transhumansim, took place over the course of several years, mainly in Bar Ilan University. The number of participants was not large, from a few people to a few dozen people, yet these meetings helped to form and maintain the core community and to attract new members. From these meetings, there emerged the first (and still the only) site in Israel, fully dedicated to life extension and transhumanism: http://singulariut.com/

These were the two main foundational elements for the development of the community: First, the regular meetings that enabled us to maintain the community and attract new participants, and second, the creation of the dedicated website that enabled the general public to learn about the community and the ideas of transhumanism and life-extension and find their way to the community.

This way, thanks to the meetings and the website, also Israeli journalists found out about the community and gave it coverage. And that gave the additional boost to the spread of the transhumansit/life-extensionist ideas in Israel. Starting from the first report in the prestigious Israeli newspaper “Haaretz” in April 2010

https://www.haaretz.co.il/science/1.1196720 the media coverage of the transhumanist ideas and community has been constant. Notably, the reports have been largely sympathetic.

Members of the Israeli tranhumanist community have been reliable and positive people, mainly students and research students. They articulated their ideas clearly and logically. They did not create an impression of strangeness or alienation, but established the vision of transhumanism as an optimistic and progressive philosophical and social movement, thinking and working for the long term to benefit the entire society, even though the technologies it envisions are only emerging, and not yet present in daily life.

Thus, there is no shame or danger for one’s career to identify as a transhuminist in Israel (perhaps as it is in some other countries), but such an identification is also not common, as there are also no real benefits from such an identification. Therefore the “declared tranhumanist” community has never been numerous in Israel (perhaps just tens of people who have self-identified as “transhumanist”). Also the movement has never been formally incorporated. Moreover, in recent years, the meetings and publications explicitly branded as “transhumanist” have become more rare here.

Yet, the core values of transhumanism, such as the striving for the extension of healthy life for the entire society by technological means, has been much more prevalent in Israel. These core values have continued to be promoted in all walks of Israeli society. The main strategy for their promotion has been to raise awareness and support for the most practical and feasible beneficial technologies for the present, such as geroscience-based therapies for healthy longevity, but never loosing sight of the larger perspectives and the longer term possibilities of development.

Join the Israeli Longevity Alliance / International Longevity Alliance – Israel

ILA-ISRLA-LOGO

Dear friends,

On May 1, 2014, there was registered the Israeli Longevity Alliance. It was registered as an integral and constitutive part of the International Longevity Alliance (as said in our bylaws, # 20b).
http://www.singulariut.com/2015/08/817

Now we would like to strengthen our ties with the international longevity movement, and indeed strengthen the international longevity movement. Thus, we would like to invite longevity activists from around the world to join our Alliance – the Israeli Longevity Alliance / International Longevity Alliance (Israel).

To apply, you can simply send the letter of the following content (as required by our bylaws # 1b), to [email protected] or directly to the acting chair of the alliance [email protected]

“I (name, address, email) request to be admitted as a member of the Israeli Longevity Alliance. The objectives of the Alliance are known to me. If admitted as a member I undertake to comply with the provisions of the articles of the Alliance and with the decisions of the Alliance’s general assembly.”

We would also be grateful if you add in the letter a few words about yourself and your interest in life extension, as well as the ways *you personally* would be willing and ready to contribute to the work of our organization and of the longevity movement at large (such as building websites for longevity content in different languages, writing or translating pro-longevity materials, organizing pro-longevity meetings in your area, contacting politicians and media, scientific expertise, any other skills, expertise, or suggestions of activity).

Alternatively, you are welcome to fill in the application form online (in English or Hebrew) http://goo.gl/forms/ExDJc7z01t

If you can represent an NGO from anywhere in the world, you are welcome to join your NGO as a member of the Alliance (NGOs can join the Alliance as members through their representatives exactly as individual members would). In this way, we can also build up the alliance or network of pro-longevity NGOs internationally.

The Israeli Longevity Alliance has been at the forefront of the longevity movement in Israel. Its members were instrumental in organizing national conferences on longevity (e.g. on October 1, 2013, during the first International Longevity Day), and March 27, 2014, during Israel Science Day, as well as petitioned the authorities and organized smaller events and publications throughout the year. We strive to intensify longevity research activism. For example we promote the position paper of the International Society on Aging and Disease (ISOAD, with which our Alliance is also affiliated) on “The Critical Need to Promote Research on Biology of Aging and Aging-related Diseases to Improve Health and Longevity of the Elderly Population.” It is available in 9 languages, including Hebrew.

http://www.longevityforall.org/the-critical-need-to-promote-research-of-aging-around-the-world/

We invite longevity activists from around the world to join forces, both here in Israel and everywhere.

Presently, the membership is free, at least until the end of 2015.

The next General assembly will apparently need to be conducted with the help of a video chat system (as currently required by the bylaws # 8b, until a possible different technical solution is found), though the general proceedings and discussions can be done via email or social media. E.g. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LongevityIsrael/

https://www.facebook.com/Israeli-Longevity-Alliance-617816694947283/timeline/

Together we will act as mutual catalysis to encourage longevity activism around the world!

Longevity Day in Israel – October 1 – 2013

Longevity Day Logo

On October 1, the International Day of Older Persons/ International Longevity Day, the conference took place in Tel Aviv, at the Hemda Science Education Center, titled “From Biology of Aging to Longevity and Quality of Life”.

The conference was a success! Over 70 researchers and research students participated, from all the universities in Israel, with 16 presentations by some of the top researchers. Over 30 submissions were made for the excellence prize for the research of biology of aging, longevity and quality of life, and 8 prizes were awarded to 8 applicants from 8 different laboratories!

Many thanks to Dr. Eitan Krein, director of the Science program at Hemda Science Education Center in Tel Aviv and Yanki Margalit, the social entrepreneur and Chairman of SpaceIL Foundation – for making this event possible!

Many thanks to the judges of the excellence prize: Prof. Vera Gorbunova (US), Prof. Zipora Yablonka-Reuveni (US), and Prof Gil Atzmon (US).

Below is the conference program. Here are also the  Video-recordings of the conference presentations and some pictures.

In addition, over 150 people attended the session for the general public that was held after the conference.

Special thanks to Dr. Yaakov Ben Shaul for helping to spread the word about the conference and the subject of longevity research in the Israeli mass media on that day, including several tv, radio and newspapers interviews!

Many thanks to all the wonderful people who attended, contributed proposals and presentations, helped and supported! Hopefully, many more activities in support of longevity research will follow – raising public awareness and lobbying for the field of the biology of aging and longevity research and its importance for the public health in Israel and everywhere!
